What my "School" never taught me?
Before reading this blog, pause for a moment and ask yourself "What is the one most important thing that you have learnt in school and is useful in your life right now?"
I am sure most of you won't be able to recall a single thing that is useful.
WHAT IS SCHOOL FOR?
As told by our parents, relatives, neighbors and so called 'wise people', who give advice unnecessarily and free of cost, that school is for EDUCATION. Is it so?
The word Education is derived from the Latin word 'educe' which means to draw forth or bring out i.e., to bring out the gifts of people, but school doesn't brings out much, it stuffs more facts inside of you.
Imagine a girl sitting at the back of the classroom, she doesn't talk with anyone in the class and she fails in almost every subjects but at the back of her head she has a passion and if nurtured and brought out, it may lead her to discover the cure for Alzheimer's but instead what happens in reality is that she is bullied by everyone in the class, the teacher shouts at her for not memorizing her homework and at the end of the day she becomes mentally unstable. Who is at fault? The teachers, the school authorities or the person who designed the education system?
I have gone to school for more than 13 years and I still don't know how to pay my taxes, buy a home , apply for a loan , invest my money or build a good credit score. But luckily the school taught me some important things like how to factorize a quadratic equation and mitochondria is the power house of the cell.
Most of the students try to avoid eye contact with the teacher in fear of being asked questions which proves that school isn't a place for learning. It is a game that is played everyday to get A grades and get nothing out of it. The real Education is not taught in school, school just teaches you how to memorize concepts and throw it out in the test. We are given so many homeworks and projects to complete by the end of the week and all of this is just a waste of time and energy.
Suicides is the 3rd most cause of deaths between the ages 10-24, but still school pays no heed to the mental health of its own gems. If school was really interested in our personal and academic success, then we would have been given more freedom in choosing our subjects and our homework would be a lot less. We are never taught time management skills but our teachers always expected us to spend our time wisely
"Education is the most powerful weapon with which one can change the world" - Nelson Mandela
True Education teaches you how to bind with each other. True Education teaches you how to catch a fish, but school teaches you that you have caught the fish but you haven't shown the work so it does not count.
We need reading , writing, speaking and a bit of arithmetic skills but memorizing that mitochondria is the power house of the cell is of no use. The biggest force of success is self-control and emotional health then why the heck we are not taught to deal with failure, rejection, stress and bullies.
Some schools are great and some teachers are real treasures but there is a difference between people who are smart and people who score better. You future is not determined by any test. Your destiny is in your hands and you must shape it to be great.
So, to all the respected teachers, principles , students and whoever is reading this. Don't judge anyone by their test scores because you don't know what potential that person holds.
"Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school" - Albert Einstein
